  • Free, no signup
  • Four calculation methods
  • Your metrics stay local

Write it once, post it everywhere. Social Magnum schedules and publishes to all 20+ networks in one click.

Calculate your engagement rate

Your metrics

Use one follower count for the selected posts. Set posts to 1 for a single post.

More than 1 gives an average per post.

Enter interactions

Use interactions for the same post or selected posts. Count each action once.

Optional: clicks or other non-overlapping actions.

Unused fields count as zero. Enter 0 explicitly if there were no interactions.

Free and calculated on your device. No username, account connection or metric upload.

Your result

Know what goes into the percentage.

Enter your metrics, choose the denominator and select Calculate rate. Your result and the exact calculation will appear here.

Interactions ÷ (followers × posts) × 100

Interactions are actions, not unique people. Compare results only when the method, included actions and reporting period match.

50 ÷ (1,000 × 1 post) × 100

5.00%

The same 50 interactions divided by 500 reached accounts gives 10.00%. The denominator changes the question.

From counts to context

How to calculate your engagement rate

Start with a matching set of numbers. A useful rate needs a clear denominator and a consistent definition of interaction.

  1. 1

    Choose the denominator

Use followers, reach, impressions or views. The label and formula stay visible so you can tell someone exactly what your percentage means.

  2. 2

    Enter matching metrics

Use the same post or selected posts for every count. For follower-based averages, include the number of posts and one consistent follower count.

  3. 3

    Add interactions once

Enter the breakdown or switch to an existing total. Keep those two approaches separate so reactions, comments or saves are not counted twice.

  4. 4

    Calculate, copy and compare

Copy the result with its denominator and formula attached. Compare it with a report that uses the same method and measurement window.

One result is a starting point.

A single percentage cannot tell you why a post worked. Keep the post format, topic and audience context alongside the number. Social Magnum helps you plan your next posts and review reports for connected accounts in one place.

The formulas

Four ways to calculate engagement rate

Each method divides interaction actions by a different base, then multiplies by 100. Here is how the same 50 interactions change with the denominator.

Engagement rate formulas with worked examples
MethodFormulaExample
FollowersInteractions ÷ (followers × posts) × 10050 ÷ (1,000 × 1) × 100 = 5.00%
ReachInteractions ÷ reach × 10050 ÷ 500 × 100 = 10.00%
ImpressionsInteractions ÷ impressions × 10050 ÷ 2,000 × 100 = 2.50%
ViewsInteractions ÷ views × 10050 ÷ 5,000 × 100 = 1.00%

For a follower-based average, 250 total interactions across five posts with a fixed base of 1,000 followers gives 250 ÷ (1,000 × 5) × 100 = 5.00%. For the other methods, combining totals produces an aggregate ratio. For example, 10 interactions / 100 impressions and 10 / 1,000 have individual rates of 10% and 1%; their mean is 5.50%, while their aggregate ratio is 20 / 1,100 × 100 = 1.82%.

For the reports you need to explain

Bring your own counts. Leave with the percentage and its working.

Creators

Check a post’s interactions relative to followers or views. Keep the calculation method beside the number when sharing it with a brand.

Social media managers

Calculate results for a consistent set of posts. Use the copyable report to show clients what was included in the percentage.

Small businesses

Compare similar posts from your own account using a repeatable method, without connecting an account or entering a username.

Agencies and analysts

Reconcile a supplied interaction total with your chosen denominator. Use the worked examples to separate aggregate ratios from average post rates.

Engagement rate questions, answered

How do I calculate engagement rate?

Choose your denominator, enter its count, then add your interaction counts or enter an existing total. Select Calculate rate to see the percentage and the exact formula. Use numbers from the same post or set of posts. The calculator does not fetch account data.

Can I use this for Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn or Facebook?

Yes. It works with user-entered metrics from any platform. Select the method that matches your reporting goal and include only the actions you intend to measure. It does not recreate a platform’s native dashboard automatically, and you do not need to connect a social account.

Which interactions should I include?

The breakdown provides likes or reactions, comments or replies, shares or reposts, saves and optional other interactions. Use Other for non-overlapping actions such as clicks when they belong in your chosen definition. Leave unavailable categories blank. If your dashboard already provides a total, use I have a total so you do not add its components twice.

How do I calculate average engagement per post?

Choose By followers, enter one follower count, set the number of posts and enter the total interactions across those posts. The calculator divides interactions by followers multiplied by posts, then multiplies by 100. This assumes a fixed follower count. If follower counts differ between posts, calculate each post’s rate separately and average those rates instead.

Can I combine reach, impressions or views from several posts?

Yes, if you add the interaction counts and the matching denominator counts for the same posts and reporting window. The result is an aggregate ratio, not the arithmetic average of individual post rates. When adding reach across posts, a person can be counted once for each post; do not substitute deduplicated account reach and call it the same measure.

Why does this differ from my platform’s engagement rate?

Check which actions the platform includes, which denominator it uses, whether it includes paid activity and when the metrics were collected. A dashboard can include clicks or other interactions that are missing from a public post. This calculator uses exactly the values you enter, with no hidden platform multiplier.

Can an engagement rate be more than 100%?

Yes. Interactions count actions, and one person can take several actions. A follower-based rate can also include interactions from non-followers. The calculator keeps results above 100% and shows a reminder to check the input scope; it does not cap a valid calculation.

What is a good engagement rate?

There is no universal grade that applies to every calculation. Compare against your own previous posts or a benchmark that uses the same platform, content format, denominator and included actions. This calculator deliberately shows the math without labelling an unmatched percentage good or bad.

What happens when a count is zero or missing?

Zero interactions are valid and produce 0.00% when the denominator is positive. A zero or missing denominator cannot produce a rate. At least one interaction count must be entered, even if it is zero. Negative numbers, decimals and shorthand such as 1k are rejected; whole numbers and correctly grouped commas such as 1,000 are accepted.

Are my account metrics stored or uploaded?

No. Calculation happens in this browser tab, and entered metrics are not saved to a database, browser storage or a URL. Copy result copies a report only when you choose it. If you accept the site’s analytics cookies, usage events can record that the calculator was used and which method was selected, without your counts or result.

How precise is the result?

Percentages are rounded to two decimal places. A positive rate below 0.01% is shown as less than 0.01%, so it is not confused with zero. Each input supports up to one billion, and the follower method supports up to one million posts. Editing any input clears the previous result until you calculate again.
