Instagram Profile Picture Size: Nobody Publishes One

Page one gives five different answers to this question, and one of them is the size of a completely different image.

Instagram, meanwhile, gives none. We looked in two places and it does not publish a profile picture dimension anywhere we could find — which is why the numbers in circulation have drifted so far apart.

Key facts, checked two ways on 21 August 2026: Instagram’s help centre returns no article stating a profile picture dimension, and its own article on adding or changing a profile picture (help.instagram.com) gives steps only. It does state that your profile picture is public to everyone, on or off Instagram, even without an account. Every Instagram dp or pfp size in circulation, 110 × 110, 160 × 160, 165 × 165 and 320 × 320, is convention; 320 × 320 appears to be the stored size, about 110 × 110 the displayed one, and guides quote 180 × 180 on desktop. Upload a square at 1080 × 1080 or at least 320 × 320, composed for a circular crop.

What Instagram publishes: nothing#

We checked this two ways rather than assuming, because “we could not find it” is a weaker claim than it sounds.

• Searching Instagram’s help centre for a profile picture size returns twenty-five articles, none of which states a dimension.
• Instagram’s own article on adding or changing your profile picture gives the steps — Edit profile, Change photo, Upload photo — and no size at all.

So every figure you will read for this is convention. Some of it is good convention. None of it is a specification, and there is nothing to re-read when it changes.

The five numbers in circulation#

Four of those are square, which at least agrees with the shape. The fifth is not, and it is worth its own section.

420 × 654 is a Reel cover#

One tool page currently ranking for this query lists “Profile Picture Size 420 x 654” among its Instagram presets.

420 × 654 is the Instagram Reel cover size. It is a real Instagram dimension — we wrote about it in our guide to the Instagram Reel size, where it matters because a Reel cover cannot be changed after upload. It is not a profile picture, and it is not square.

110 and 320 are both right#

The apparent disagreement between the two most common figures dissolves once you notice they are measuring different things.

320 × 320 is what gets stored. 110 × 110 is roughly what gets displayed on a profile. One result on page one states this explicitly — that photos are displayed small but the files are stored at 320 — and it is the most useful sentence anyone offers.

This is exactly the confusion we untangled writing about the YouTube profile picture size, where YouTube publishes only a render size of 98 × 98 and people upload at it, producing a blurry avatar. The rule is the same everywhere: upload the stored size, not the displayed one.

The note Instagram does publish#

Instagram’s profile picture article contains no dimensions and one warning, and the warning is more consequential than any number on this page.

Instagram states that your profile picture can be associated with you and is public to everyone, on or off Instagram, even to people who do not have an Instagram account.

That is worth knowing before choosing a photograph of your children, your home, or anything else you would not put on a public website. It is the single most important fact about an Instagram profile picture, and it appears in no size guide we read.

The other thing on your profile picture#

Instagram lets you attach an avatar to the same slot, so visitors can swipe between your photograph and an illustrated character of you.

It is documented in the same corner of the help centre as the profile picture itself, and it changes what the slot is: not one image but two, with the second one generated rather than uploaded. If you have ever seen a profile picture that seemed to flip, that is what happened.

For a business account it is usually the wrong choice, because the value of a profile picture is being recognised instantly and a second image works against that. For a personal account it costs nothing and is easily removed.

One image, many contexts#

The reason to compose carefully rather than just size correctly is that this single file appears almost everywhere you exist on Instagram, at wildly different scales.

• Largest on your own profile, where you probably judge it.
• Small in the Stories tray, ringed and slightly cropped by the ring.
• Smaller again beside every comment and reply you leave.
• Smallest in a list of likes, where it is a few dozen pixels across.

A design has to survive the smallest of those, not flatter the largest. In practice that means one strong shape, one face, or one or two letters — never a full wordmark and never fine detail, both of which turn to mush at the size most people actually see you.

The avatar also has to survive being ringed. When you post a Story, the picture is drawn inside a coloured ring that eats a little further into the edge, so a design already tight against the circular crop loses another sliver precisely when more people are looking at it.

Square file, circular display#

Instagram accepts a square and shows a circle, which decides how the image should be composed rather than how large it should be.

The corners of your square are outside the circle and will never be seen. A logo that fills its bounding box loses its edges; a face positioned off-centre loses part of itself. The fix is padding — build the subject inside a comfortable margin so the circular mask takes empty space rather than content.

Check the result at the size it will really appear, too. Something legible at 320 × 320 in a design tool can be unreadable in a comment thread, which is where most people will encounter it.

Importing from Facebook#

Instagram offers to take your profile picture from Facebook, and notes that if you do, it uses the same picture you already have there.

Convenient, and worth one moment of thought: it links the two presentations of you together for anyone comparing them, and it means changing one no longer changes the other unless you repeat the import.

If the two accounts serve different purposes — a business Instagram and a personal Facebook, say — this is the shortcut most likely to be regretted quietly.

What to actually use#

Since there is no specification to follow, a defensible default rather than a rule.

• Square, and at least 320 × 320. That matches the most commonly cited stored size and costs nothing.
• Larger is safer. 1080 × 1080 is a common choice and gives dense screens something to work with. Scaling down is clean; scaling up is invention.
• Composed for a circle. Subject centred, corners empty.

The job is a square crop and an export, and the crop is where the decision sits — taking a square out of a rectangular photograph discards one dimension entirely.
